Moving On to On The Move

It has been a long while since I’ve posted. That’s not due to a lack of activity, far from it. Certain events outside of the realm of filmmaking have required my undivided attention, so I’ve been dealing with that. It’s not something I am ready to discuss at this time.

Old Scratch’s final cut is about done. This version will be the one that goes out to festivals from now on. I am organizing a list of festival to enter. Right now, I’ve had to disqualify some for time and/or funding. That is an issue for entry fees. I plan on asking for reduced fees or free ones, as well as discussing options with my fellow producer.

In the meantime I’ve begun pre-production on my next film, On The Move. This will be the first film I direct that doesn’t come from my own script. Now, you may be asking “What about Brogue and The Fight to Survive?”. I had a hand in the creation and formation of those films from the idea stage. They were the result of joking banter between myself and a co-worker.

This film comes from the mind of Ashley Anh Bo, a family friend and my wife’s former karate student. She’s had this idea floating in her mind for a long time and came to me with a prose form of a story. We took time to develop it into script form and five drafts later we’re ready to go.

This project is my first foray into action movies. It’s not going to be Die Hard- like action, as there are only a couple of action sequences in the film. I wanted to start small and keep the recording of the action manageable.

This past week we got some exciting news. We posted our casting call through Mandy.com. We got many responses, some great, others not so much (why is a 21-year old white actor answering a call for a 20-year-old Asian male??). One of the responses came from Doua Moua, who was in Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino.

Ashley and I were overjoyed at this news. It could turn out to be a boon for us. I will probably have him audition, just to cover all of my bases, but Ashley likes him because, as an Asian, she feels he could be believable as her brother (we’re striving for authenticity in this regard. That’s why Ashley will have say in the casting process).

I am working on a website for the film, but in the meantime, I will post updates here on the Stunod Scoop. So stay tuned!
