I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and you're not consuming too many sweets.
Not long ago, Hollywood released the 2011 edition of the Black List. For those unfamiliar, it's a poll of executives on the most popular unproduced scripts of the year. I usually get a copy of some of them. It's a good read for a screenwriter to learn the writing that's making waves in Tinseltown.
On this year's list one of them caught my eye. It's titled Bethlehem, written by Larry Brenner. It caught my eye as I thought maybe it's about my town.
Then I read the logline (attached with every title on the Black List): A group of people struggling to survive a zombie apocalypse make an alliance with a vampire, trading themselves as food in exchange for protection since zombies don’t eat vampires.
My head immediately hit my desk, as it is a similar premise to my Undead: Vampires vs. Zombies. I later read somewhere that the vampire is apparently benevolent and nice, so it could be different.
I got discouraged until I recalled the 2008 Black List, which had two films about British Knights fighting a powerful force. I also recalled Deep Impact and Armageddon. If anything I became more enocuraged and willing to work at the craft of writing. At the very least I will work to make it as good as can be.
It's amazing the motivation that's out there for you.
I wish you all a very Happy New Year.
